Play takes a step closer

The first steps to bring a large-scale community play to The Burrs telling the story of the lost Roman Civitis of Petuaria have been taken.

Professional theatremakers and producers have been enlisted to ‘scope out’ the potential for a major event in 2021.

In addition to raising awareness of the historical links between Brough and Rome, a production could be realised by enlisting hundreds of residents of the village and surrounding areas to be part of the cast of performers. Those not wanting to perform could also get involved in the wide range of ‘backstage’ jobs, as well as contributing to the creative process. A small group of professional actors will perform in leading roles.

While planning is in its very early stages, initial thoughts are that the spectacle could combine historical events with recent efforts to uncover Romain remains on the playing fields site, including the rediscovery of the proscenium theatre stage gifted to the Parisi in AD140.

The team are seeking partner organisations to bring the idea to fruition and hoping that residents in the area will also be keen to play their part in taking this story to a wider audience.
